A Mom’s Diary on Vacation: Day 2 and 3
I’m going to keep it brief. In my husband’s words: we’ve struck out on the pit stops.
Did we get it all? (he’s meaning the children.)
Pit stop at a park, no one had the appropriate foot wear so when mulch gets in flip flops it’s just not right. Add that to an exhausted 5 year old who was up super early thanks to two of her other siblings, well, melt down is imminent. Speaking of footwear-did you know Texas has fire ants? Oh, and they make hills. Hills that apparently when you step on them they sting you. And guess who stepped on it at the park? The toddler. Yes people. She handled better than I would have. The hubs is the best because he grabs her up and pulls those shoes off and gets them off her. He is then stung in the process. Not. Fun.
I have to say once we got back in the car after a very whiny and exhausting picnic at the park, we were praying for nap. And nap they did. What is it about naps? When the 5 year old woke up it’s like another person…chatty Kathy was now in our van… it’s because she is a mermaid and we were arriving at the beach.
We arrived at Galveston and we hit the beach right away. We played so much that bedtime did not occur until 11 PM. Just remember this.
This is the kids eating Fish Gummies-my bestie requests that we do this to scare away the sharks. My kid ask to do this every time we go to the beach now.
The toddler is crying before 6 am.
Are you serious? This is vacation people.
Her and her sister were apparently having it out in their bed so I separate them and we get back to sleep. But it doesn’t matter, they needed to sleep to 10 to make up for their lack of sleep, and you know my kids.
Beach time, pool time, lunch time, back to the beach time. And the toddler is done. I have to say, I have learned something about myself lately, especially on vacations. I need a relaxing part of the day. And taking that toddler to the condo with just she and I to chill, well, I was a more refreshed Mom after that.
Going to the beach with children does something to me, it’s called exhaustion. Laying out, reading? Psshaw. Ain’t nobody got time for that when you have kids at the beach.
It’s called working out all day long.
The constant in and out of the water, the snacks, the pool, the boogie boards, the collecting of sea shells, the dumping of those sea shells. I needed a Siesta. I wouldn’t trade this time for anything, but a woman needs some rejuvenation…especially when I haven’t had any coffee since yesterday!! Detoxing is not the way to go on vacation.
Everyone then joins us back at the condo and the hubs and I notice something: everyone looks like strawberries.
Well crap. The spray sunscreen is of the devil.
So now, we have burnt, tired kids ready for dinner. Yes, because we like to live life dangerously we take 4 children out to eat who have not had rest/naps.
We make it to a restaurant that is so fun. We got to eat outside. But here is the thing: fear creeps into the hearts of all parents when you walk into the restaurant and you see cloth napkins.
What have we done? How much is this going to cost? They are hangry. We must feed them now.
Luckily they have an outside eating area that comes complete with pigeons who are walking around everywhere. I’ve never been more thankful for birds in my life. They provided a perfect distraction. The waiters were wonderful, but when the 5 year old gives the nice owner a death-stare you know that you better feed the child.
And after we eat, well, we have happy people again. While on vacation: They must sleep, they must eat… often.
Mess to Blessed
Just like we have to feed the kids and they get hangry, I need to take time to feed myself, spiritually and emotionally.
He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.
